Hellmuth and Bruson Lead All-Star Roster for World Team Poker's Team USA

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 7, 2010 -- The roster for World Team Poker’s Team USA has been set. Team Owner Phil Hellmuth Jr. and Team Captain Doyle Brunson will combine forces with other American poker greats to battle the best players from competing nations at the inaugural World Team Poker Event, May 19 at The Golden Nugget.

LEGENDARY LEADERSHIP

Phil Hellmuth, Jr. is widely considered poker’s most iconic figure and known worldwide as the “Poker Brat” and currently holds the all-time record for World Series of Poker titles with 11 bracelets to his name. Brunson, known as “Texas Dolly” and “The Godfather of Poker,” is a poker legend and one of only two poker players worldwide to hold 10 WSOP Bracelets. His amazing poker career has extended over half a century, and in his 70s Brunson is still one of the most feared and respected players in the game.

“If (Brunson) accepts I’m going to give him the captain jersey because he deserves it, and I’ll play the number two spot,” Hellmuth said at a Las Vegas press conference that officially launched World Team Poker. Now Brunson has accepted that offer and will be in command at the World Team Poker Inaugural event.

THE ALL-STAR LINE-UP

Also on the Team USA roster are sister and brother poker standouts Annie Duke and Howard Lederer. Duke is the 2010 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Champion, and has also won the 2004 WSOP Tournament of Champions and appeared on NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice” in 2009, finishing second out of sixteen competitors. Lederer has over five million dollars in career tournament winnings and holds 2 WSOP bracelets. He is known as “The Professor” for his ability to understand and articulate the finer points of poker.

Rounding out the World Team Poker Team USA roster are Allen Cunningham, Chris Ferguson, Jennifer Harman, Mike Matusow, and Erik Seidel. At only 33 years of age, Cunningham has already won 5 WSOP bracelets and is 7th on the all-time poker money list; he was the 2005 ESPN/Toyota Player of the Year. Ferguson is the 2008 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Champion and the 2000 WSOP Main Event Winner. He holds 5 career WSOP bracelets and is known for his mathematical approach to poker and his strong command of game theory. Harman is the only woman to play on a consistent basis in the “Big Game,” poker’s highest-stakes regular live game, which runs at The Bellagio. She has also won 2 WSOP bracelets and authored the chapter on limit hold em in the classic poker instructional book, “Super System II.”

Matusow is known as “The Mouth” because of his affinity for entertaining and outrageous table talk, which he often uses to put his opponents on tilt. He won the 2005 WSOP Tournament of Champions, holds 3 WSOP Bracelets, and has made multiple deep runs in WSOP Main Event. Seidel holds 8 WSOP Bracelets and won the 2008 World Poker Tour Foxwoods Championship. He is also fourth on the all-time poker money list.

THE WORLD TEAM POKER INAUGURAL EVENT

World Team Poker squads competing against the USA will be China (Co-Captains: Johnny Chan and David Chiu), Australia (Co-Captains: Jeff Lisandro and Tony G), Israel (Captain: Eli Elezra), Vietnam (Captain: Men “The Master” Nguyen), England (Captain: Ben Roberts), Brazil (Captain: Juliano Maesano), and Greece (Co-Captains: George Kapalas and George Theofanopoulos).

The event will feature 40 of the world’s top poker pros, representing 8 different countries, on 5 man teams. The filmed for television event will be a five table shoot out format consisting of rounds of Limit Hold’Em, Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold’Em. The last two players from each shoot will compete in a final-table showdown. Team Captains can make substitutions throughout the event, allowing for a level of team strategy previously unseen in poker as the Captains attempt to find the perfect matchups and place experts in different games on the felt for their respective specialties.
